it is a very bad idea to pierce your tounge,it takes forever to heal,it hearts so bad, people can't understand you when you talk, and every single meal has to be eaten through a straw. So write back to me and tell me what you think, look for zcftc...thats me!:)

I have my tongue pierced, so I hope my advice will be a little more helpful. I have not heard of anything more serious than an infection (just like with any other piercing you get) & the piercer hitting a vein, which would lead to bleeding. But a good piercer will always check for veins, so that should not be an issue. Just make sure to do a little research before deciding on a place to get your tongue pierced. As long as you clean & take care of your tongue properly, you should be fine. Your tongue will typically swell for 1-3 weeks. I have gotten my tongue pierced twice (I took it out for a few months & went back to get it repierced.) Both times, it took me about 2-3 days to talk & eat properly. The day after is always the worst - probably the one day you should avoid talking at all unless you really need to. But by day 2 or 3, you should be getting the hang of everything again. I usually noticed my tongue wasn't swollen after the first week, but everyone heals differently. If you have any other questions, feel free to leave a message in my inbox. Hope that helped!

I'm not entirely sure how much of what the user below said about going into a coma is true, I did a bit of research a didn't find any mention of it, but as with all piercings, there are risks involved.

The possibility of something life-threatening happening is reletively small but the risk is still there. There is a big risk of infection but in some cases the infection can cause blocking of the airways, which is very dangerous. There is also a risk of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) and blood poisoning from the fast spreading bacteria.

In addition, if a vein is hit then there can be serious bleeding. However, an experienced and good piercer will always check the veins in your tongue before piercing and should refuse to proceed if they appear to be too close together. I don't advice you to go ahead with the piercing if the piercer does not check your tongue beforehand.

The tongue is the fastest healing part of the body, so healing time is considerably shorter than the majority of piercings. Swelling will occur 3-7 days after the piercing but should go down after a week or so, although it will take about 4-6 weeks to heal fully will correct aftercare.

The worst thing that can happen, besides the infection, is that it can do something to your brain and that will get you into a coma. Like it shoots this pain feeling thing to your brain and next thing you know, you'r unconscious...
The infection thing is common, ye, but the coma thing ... not that common. It depends on the person who does it for you. If he's experienced then follow your gut. If it's his first time ... you know. It's a big no no.

You will be able to talk but it will hurt and you will sound weird...Like "lalala" all the time. It'll go away soon. A month or two I think.

=)
