The answers before me were very good and I'd just like to add something. Pressing "Control-Alt-Delete" will bring up your "Windows Task Manager". Click the "Processes" tab and it will tell you everything that is running on your computer at that time. The names are abbreviated so if you're not sure what something is, type the "Image Name" into a search engine and you can find out easily. Most processes can be cancelled manually from opening at startup by looking at the options for that program and unchecking a box or something, but you can always click "End Process" to shut down a program right from the task manager too. :)

hey

go to start - run & type in "msconfig"

then, go to the tab labelled "startup."

if you uncheck it, you can avoid having that program run the second you come onto windows.

also - dont change anything else cause it might permanently damage your computer.

Well, I use a downloaded program for this. It will even alert you and ask for your permission every time a program tries to start itself up. It has made a huge difference for me with the speed of my computer. :)
