You can't dye a lighter color over black. You have to bleach it out. I'm currently doing this. I used to dye my hair extremely dark brown/natural black and I wanted to get it removed after dying it that color for about 6 months. The colorist said the best way to do it is to highlight the hair.

Go to Wal-Mart or Walgreens and buy the product "Sun-In." It's a spray you spray on your hair to lighten it and then go out in the sun. The sun will already lighten your hair without it, but the product speeds up the process. Either use that or lemon juice (from real lemons not lemon juice from a bottle), they both work.

Dye it brown. Then you won't have to worry how fast it grows back out. You probably won't even notice. Having your hair stripped of color, even though it might not cost that much, is really bad for your hair. Dying it brown over the black, if it'll work, is probably much better. Good luck! :)

Well, i dont know much about dying hair, but if you dont want to spend the money to get it done professionally, if you go to the store where u bought the dye then you could ask one of the people that worked there about what you should do. Usually they can help you. Also, next time you go to get a hair cut or your family, ask the hair stylist what she recommends trying. And look at the bottle, you might have bought dye that comes out in a week or in 8 showers... :-) GoOd LuCk!!!

yea the same thing happened to me, i went to the salon and she did a conditioning thing to it that wasnt very expensive (maybe $20-15) and it also stripped all the color out of my hair. (also all of that coloring can really damage your hair soo i would suggest you to stick to your natural color for a while)
