Tremor Disorder

Question Posted Wednesday April 25 2007, 6:54 pm

Hi 14/f.

My names Whitney and when I was really young, I was diagnosed with something called a "tremor disorder." I haven't gotten tested since then but I noticed, that my 'shakes' have gotten noticeably worse over the past years and its beginning to worry me. Some days its like I don't even have it, but days like today, it's uncontrollable, and can be quite embarrassing. Sometimes its so bad that if I am holding a cup of water or something, it'll splash out..

Does anyone know of any foods, vitamins, or medicines I can take to slow down the "shakes?"

Also I am Lactose Intolerant so its hard to eat foods with calcium, so don't say milk or any other dairy products.

This is also a problem I suffer from myself but mine is a byproduct of bipolar disorder. I'm hoping that what my doctor told me about controlling my severe tremors may work for you.

I myself had tremors so bad I couldn't stop shaking at times nor could I hold a spoon, fork, cup or a piece of paper in my hand without it shaking uncontrollably.

The first thing the doctor asked me was whether I was drinking lots of bottled water or not. I wasn't. He told me that I was likely either dehydrated or not hydrated enough and that not slugging back water constantly or carrying a bottle of water with me led to being somewhat dehydrated during the course of the day or few days of not drinking water.

The result was constant tremors and shaking like yourself here. Once I drank a ton of water each day ( well 8-10 glasses of it) the tremors stopped or got to the point where I could control it by continuing to drink water.

You should stop drinking sof-drinks and juice for a while and stick to water or gatorade only and see what happens with your tremor. Also, not to be gross or anything pay attention to whether or not your urine is cloudy, a slightly orange color or clear.

If it's clear it means according to my doctor you are hydrated whereas the other cloudy, orange type means you need water. See if once it becomes clear if your tremor fades away again.

You should see your doctor and tell him someone diagnosed your tremor while you were young and said it was linked to some kind of disorder. Ask them what they think asap even if you do find drinking tons of water does in fact control and or put a stop to it.

I doubt it has anything to do with calcium or diet because if you are healthy in all aspects but this one it's clearly something alrogether different and likely non-threatening or bad at all. There's a solution for it. See your doctor and also try and see if this works too.

Can you get calcium through those little Viactiv chews? Calcium is essential for healthy muscle function.

I don't know of foods to take to slow down the shakes, but avoid caffeine as that can make it worse. Do not drink energy drinks.

And I think seeing your doctor again is a good idea. At the least, s/he can refer you to an occupational therapist, which is someone who might be able to help you deal with the every-day ramifications of your disorder.

Good luck.

the only person that can really help you with this and knows most about it is your doctor.

tell you parents what's going on and tell them to take you to the doctor and tell the doctor exactly what you told me and he'll recommend anything to make it better.
