Sleeping

Question Posted Monday April 23 2007, 6:59 pm

I've tried ear plugs but i still can hear some sounds made by the passing cars, slamming gates and all in front of my house. I'm so afraid of hearing sounds at night that I actually keep my ears open for sounds and I don't dare go to sleep for fear that I'd be woken up by sounds later on at night.

Sometimes, I'm so exhausted that I tell myself to just sleep but I can't. THe moment I lie on my bed, I have that sickening exhausting yet unable to sleep experience. Don't tell me to use radio, ear plugs, white noise, etc. It ALL DON"T WORK. I'm going crazy. Every single sound is keeping me up and I can't stop anticipating the next sound. Everytime I get woken up by a sound I start to cry because I'm so angry with myself for transforming from a heavy to a light sleeper. Someone pls help me sleep. I NEED IT!! I'm going crazy.

If you just lie there trying to fall asleep you never will. The more you think about it, the more you'll drive yourself absolutely crazy. Try to find something to occupy your mind. If music doesn't work, try reading for awhile. When I was younger I would read until I got really tired or just fell asleep on my book. If you read right before bed, your mind will be filled with everything you just read. You'll be thinking about the story and what happened or trying to guess what's going to hapen next next. Sleep should come really easily. If you're not that into reading, try to find something else to occupy your mind. Organized daydreaming usually works pretty good. As I got older, I didn't want to sit up for a long time reading, so I skipped the reading and got straight to the thinking part. I became an author and I basically wrote a novel in my head until I fell asleep. This was easy for me after so many years of reading. Even if you haven't done that much reading it should still come naturally. If you want to try this, it's easiest if you make yourself the main character. If you're Christian, praying can be a good way to wind down too. Lie there in bed and pray for anything and everything you can think of. There's a lot of stuff and you can go on for a long time thinking of things to pray about. You should fall asleep in no time. If you still can't seem to find anything that works, don't be afraid to see a doctor or counselor. Good luck! :)

I don't have much sleep trouble myself if I get enough exercise during the day. But this sounds like more of a mental than physical thing. (You said "I'm going crazy" twice.) You should definitely consult somebody. Don't self-medicate.

I, personally, wrap my pillow around my head to block out noises and light. But with the anticipation of noise keeping you awake, it makes me think that you actually need sleeping pills because anxiety plays a big component in your lack of sleep. Go see your doctor.

I know you said no radio or nething but u could start listening to your ipod when you go to bed. If headphones are uncomfertable, there are these "ipod pillows" and you plug ur ipod into it and the speaker is in the middle. Other than that you could leave your TV on when you go to sleep. If none of that works, you could always take a nap when you get home before your worry about those sounds at night {at lest you would be getting some sleep}. Hope i've helped!!!
