sore muscles

Question Posted Thursday April 19 2007, 6:34 pm

I have been sick with mono for about 4 weeks ago and I think It's gone, however I feel that I am still not fully recovered. I participate in track and soccer and I regret that I have been practicing too hard too soon. Now, I am super sore and My question is how can I treat my sore muscles (mostly my hamstrings, quads, calves, and shins.. and also maybe abdominal muscles). How can I treat these so they can become less sore and so that I don't have to take it easy and stop playing sports?

14/f thanks!

Hi.

Sorry to hear about you being sick but it's good to know you're on the way to being better :]

For the sore muscles I think the best thing to use would be hot water bottles (just be sure not to use them while you are sleeping). You can also get patches which when applied to skin, will heat up. They are also very handy to use but again ensure you do not use them while being asleep. Most important of all - you need to give yourself time.

It will take time and patience to get back into your normal sporty self, you will need to start slowly and gradually get back into your normal routine letting your muscles adjust. You'll be able to play sports but you mustlet yourself heal up otherwise you'd only be doing your body more harm.

If the pain/soreness starts to get worse then seing your family doctor might be a good idea who can advise you a lot better than I can. Either way though good luck and take care yourself... give yourself time to heal. :]
