I'm having my braces removed in a couple of days. I'm concerned though, 'cause the dentist said that it's a 2-day process.
I got them on October 31st, 2005 (no candy for me that year, i know!). So it's been like 2 point something years so far. What should I expect during and after the removal? Blood? Weird nasty tastes?...Tooth decoloration? Pain?
Also, the dentist will file my teeth 'cause they're not all similar in length. Will that hurt or bleed or anything?
And is the switch from braces to a retainer a big jump? Did anyone get braces then retainers?
I'd like to know what it was like for you guys. If you haven't had them, it's ok, i'd still like to know what you think awaits me!
I'm 18/f.
Thank you. =D

I did however, get the chipped off glue all in my mouth but the hygienist gave me some water to rinse it out. There really shouldn't be any discoloration as long as you've cleaned your teeth well while you had braces. When I had my first set of braces removed, I had little white (whiter than the rest of the tooth) squares around where the brackets were. My orthodontist told me those were actually the first stage of cavities and they're permanent.
As far as the filing goes, it feels about like the slight sharpness you feel when you get a cavity drilled. My orthodontist didn't give me Novicane when I had the filing done. It didn't take very long and was only slightly painful.
The switch from braces to retainer isn't too bad. The worst part is having to remember to wear it and keep up with it. A word from the wise-- DO keep your retainer in its case. Don't just leave it on your counter or nightstand without it being in the case. I did that and now my retainer is falling apart. Parts of the plastic has started to chip off and it has a small crack in it, which makes it fit loosely around my teeth. [ hinatalie's advice column | Ask hinatalie A Question ]
krazyismefosho answered Friday April 13 2007, 8:10 pm: I got my braces off about a year ago.
For me, they took out the wire, yanked the brackets off (don't worry, doesn't hurt a bit), and just used a dremel-tool-thing to scrape all of the glue off.
It's not the most pleasent expierience, but it's nothing to worry about.
The end result is amazing.
There is a little blood, depending on how precise your hygenist is with the dremel tool (uhh mine wasn't.. lol). But there's barely any.
Retainers are so easy. You just leave them on your bathroom counter and put them in after you brush your teeth at night. EVERYBODY gets retainers.. it keeps your teeth straight.
I would also ask your ortho about when you can use Crest Whitestrips or get your teeth whitened because they won't be white when they take the braces off. Some ortho's bleach the teeth after you get your braces off, but not all of them do.
I think you can ask him to file it down, but mine aren't and I get so many comments on my perfect smile, even though my teeth aren't all the same length. It actually looks better not filed down. If it really bothers you, then just ask.
orphans answered Friday April 13 2007, 7:07 pm: no it doesnt hurt, its like nothing compared to when you got them on. you might taste the cement on your teeth if they dont get it all offf so just dont lick ur teeth. going from braces to a retainer is not a big difference, except for that u dont have annoying little square things on your teeth all day. uisforukelele answered Friday April 13 2007, 5:05 pm: i had braces twice, and got them off twice. first question: blood? no. weird nasty tastes? probably, but it's not really that bad. tooth discoloration? probably not, unless you eat mud. and it can be fixed with crest whitestrips in three days. pain? i didn't have any pain, there was a little bit of pressure but basically they just come off like that (snaps fingers). teeth filing: that will not hurt at all. you can't even really tell what they're doing. switch from braces to retainer: no. everybody gets a retainer after they have braces to keep the teeth in place. mainly, you just have to wear a retainer at night. they also might put in a permanent bottom or top retainer (but it is behind the teeth, so nobody notices, and you can't even feel it... i have a permanent bottom and i wear my top retainer at night). having a retainer is so much better than having braces! TEENAGExHEARTS answered Friday April 13 2007, 4:00 pm: i got mine off in december of 06 so i'll help you out, but i'm going to be completely honest with you. yes it hurts. but its completely worth it. when they are taking off your braces there will be blood due to the fact that they scrape at your teeth and make your gums inflamed and then they start to bleed. to you your teeth will feel funny, kinda slimy, but its ok that should go away once you brush them. and you shouldn't have any tooth discoloration if you've been brushing good. now your gums will stay inflamed for a couple of days but just brush them good and it should go away soon.
ok i've had my teeth filed before and it doesn't neccesarily hurt, it just feels funny. i'm sensitive so it was extremely uncomfortable for me and my eyes started tearing up. but remember in the end its completely worth it :]
now for retainers they are like 100 times better than braces. at first they will feel weird and you'll have a lispe but that goes away in about 3 days. if your at home try talking as much as possible so your mouth gets used to the retainer in there.
JoshPwn answered Friday April 13 2007, 3:51 pm: Your teeth will feel a little funny once your braces have been removed, you shall then have a mould of your teeth taken so that the retainers can be made, I expect you will just have to wear them whilst you sleep everynight, they might feel tight but thats good, as you know they will stop your teeth from moving back. About the filing of your teeth, i dont know if that will hurt as i have not had it done, although i dont expect it will hurt. Whilst having your braces removed there shouldnt be any blood, although whilst they file off the glue, then if they catch your gums it might bleed a little, but it doesnt hurt. Depending on how well you cleaned your teeth whilst having braces, there shouldnt be any decoloration. Hope this helps :) [ JoshPwn's advice column | Ask JoshPwn A Question ]
DonutHolez567 answered Friday April 13 2007, 3:46 pm: I just got my braces off not to long ago. It wasnt horrible but it wasnt fun either. The worst part for me was when the had to remove the glue from my teeth with the little drill thing, it tasted and smelled pretty bad and kind of stung. Otherwise though it was rather quick and not to bad.
I dont know about the filing sorry.
As for the retainers mine are painful if i wear them for along time, its just that sore achey type feeeling. Same as with braces. But its not that big of a differnce, the only hard part is remembering to wear and clean them. Good luck and congrats! Hope all goes well.

XSugarPieX77 answered Friday April 13 2007, 1:43 pm: Its really not as bad as people would think. Just make sure you take 2 advils before you get them off, and after. No blood will appear when they are removed. Possibly some weird tastes, like the cement thats on your teeth. Tooth decoloration is a big possibility, and your orthodontist will probably recommend for you to get a kit that helps with that. Yes, their will be some pain most likey, the pressure of taking off your braces, but not much. The tooth file gives your teeths ome discomfort, i've had my teeth filed, and did not enjoy it, but its not that bad. It wont make your mouth bleed. Yes, going to a retainer is a big change, not a big jump though, the retainer isnt as bad as braces, no pain. lol. Everyone gets a retainer after braces. I'm 15, i still have my braces on. I got them on 4 years ago, so you can imagine how much I know about this. Hope I helped! Happy Spring.
xokristabelle answered Friday April 13 2007, 1:34 pm: When I got mine removed, it wasn't a 2-day process. It's pretty dull but not painful- the only part that might hurt is getting the metal part towards the back of your mouth off- but it's very brief. If you have chipped or sensitive teeth, let them know.
If you weren't very good at brushing your teeth, there's probably some discoloration- also sometimes a small amount of glue won't come off for a week or so. My teeth were fairly discolored, but I used Crest Whitestrips and they went back to normal (god, I sound like a bad commercial).
The filing will just feel strange, no hurting or bleeding- I've had it done.
You will be expected to wear your retainer pretty much 24 hours a day beyond eating. It feels strange at first, and it's hard to talk with it in. I'd recommend going home and singing/talking for a while just to get used to it. I cannot emphasize this enough: WEAR YOUR RETAINER! I know a girl who wore braces for several years, then only wore her retainer at night. Her teeth are now extremely crooked to the point where when I first met her, I assumed she couldn't afford braces. I didn't wear mine at first, and now I have a tooth that is almost sideways and won't go back. WEAR IT or have braces as an adult. (Or Invisalign, which is very painful and expensive)
One thing, getting your braces off feels really strange. For a while you will feel as though you have no teeth, that will go away. If you experience any pain, advil will help. [ xokristabelle's advice column | Ask xokristabelle A Question ]
