Safety

Question Posted Wednesday April 11 2007, 10:20 am

Yeah is there anything I can do to become a better high school safety? Any drills and tips would be fine. Also what is the average size for a high school safety?

hmmm, I'd say the average safety is about 5 10 in highschool, but that varies.

if you're a little bad ass motherfucker, you could be 5 6 and 140 pounds and kick ass. However, you'd have to be extremely quick and talented for your size. Those types of safeties are rare because they tend to get injured

Also, as far as high school goes, the bigger players capable of playing safety tend to get moved to linebackers or D linemen, the defensive backs tend to be smaller so you won't find any really big safeties.

Feet work is crucial, run routes, ladders, ropes. Suicide runs are also pretty important. You pretty much want ot be able to plant you feet, turn, jump, etc... as smoothly and quickly as possible.

Also, as a defensive player, you need fast reflexes and explosion. Explosion can be developed in several ways. Work on your 40 time, power cleans, and stairs.

lifting is pretty important to, as well as gaining weight. You want to be no less tahn 150, if you are udner 150, you'll have a really, really hard time playing. If you need help gaining weight, I'd recommend creatine if you are over 16 and pretty well developed already. if you're a late grower, don't do creatine.

basically i don't have any websites that i know of where there are really good safety drills, but the drills you need to be doing are footwork drills(for ex. the ladder), and some basic zone coverage drills such as learning where to go and what to do in lets say a Cover 2 or 3, and you also need to learn to read a quarterback, because often in high school football a quarterback will telegraph his passes and if you can read him well enough you can jump the route and get an int.
For the average size of a safety, is about 5'8" to about 6'1", it all depends there are many different needs forr safety, like John Lynch who is 6'2", 240, you will probably need to be somewhere in between 150-200 lbs depending on your height.

Oh football! I read this question quite a few times & i was like "high school safety drills what?" I thought you meant like earthquakes or fire drills or something haha. Anyways, this website has drills-

If you scroll down to the bottom they're there. I thought this was helpful also-

Check those out. Sorry if they aren't exactly what you're looking for. My friend plays safety for 12th grade on his high school team. There isn't a set average but he told me once [im not sure why he did] that the height is usually somewhere in the 5'8+ range who weighs 150+ and also who's quick on their feet since it is the teams last line of defense.

-hope that helped!♥
