communism in cuba

Question Posted Monday April 9 2007, 6:35 pm

Everyone says that if you go to Cuba people will kill you. What is the USA-Cuba relationship like and why? Also why are so many people leaving Cuba and how do they escape and where do they go?

(Sorry but there's so many questions running through my head.)

People in Cuba are generally nice. It's just like the US, but you don't have any rights and it's poorer. People won't try to kill you, but they might discriminate against you the same way people from the US discriminate against middle-eastern people. There's an embargo* between the US and Cuba. So to get to Cuba you have to go to Canada/Mexico/Europe first, then Cuba. Not many people emigrate from Cuba like that, it's rare. Those that do, do it for the same reasons people from Mexico try to illegally cross into the US border: they are poor, or there is a lack of jobs, and they think there will be more opportunities here.

*Did you know that the US helped Fidel Castro revolt against the old Cuban government? They then expected Castro to make a "democracy", modeled after the US. When he instead made it a dictatorship and (falsely) claimed that it was a communist nation, the US did the national equivalent of saying "I'm not talking to you any more", and banned trade and travel to Cuba. The ban is called an embargo.
