You can do this by talking to him on a daily basis, even if it's the littlest thing. As long as it's somewhat interesting, you're good.
Ask him to hang out with you somewhere (the movies, out to dinner, etc.) frequently, especially, while you two are trying to get to know each other (after talking to him more often, for a while).
