is chinese a language? what exactly would it be because there are dialects

cantonese and mandarin are dialects.. but

what is a dialect

Chinese is actually not a language. It's just the popular and modern name for the language that Chinese people use. The real name for their language is called fookonese. Because of it's real name, it's often referred to as chinese. One of the Austin Power movies made a pun of this word.

Cantonese and manderin are dialects of the language. Dialects are variations of the same language. For example, in the United States, we speak a different dialect of English than someone in Australia, or England.
