how do you know when you "popped your cherry"

and should i be embarassed that i bled on his fingers?

I consider having sex for the first time 'popping your cherry' that is really the correct term of loosing your virginity...

But breaking the hymen could happen many ways, don't be embarrased that you bled on his fingers. If he's disgusted then thats his problem.. water and soap will fix that.

He knew you were a virgin??? Then what else would he have expected?

Usually, you don't feel hymen being broken. And you shouldn't be embarassed because he'll know he broke your cherry, so it shouldn't be much to worry about. =)
