Birth control

Question Posted Tuesday March 20 2007, 10:25 pm

I'm going on birth control because my cramps come from hell and my period lasts almost 2 weeks.

What are the side effects?

I heard it clears up your acne/or makes it worse and that you gain weight?

Well, for me it hasn't changed my acne. It's still the same. I've never had a lot though. But when I first started using it I DID gain about five pounds. I've lost them now though, because I watch what I eat, unlike I did before I was on birth control. But, it really all depends on the person. Some people don't gain weight, some do, some will stay the same. Some peoples skin clears up, some don't, some gets worse. No one can tell you exactly what effects birth control will have on YOUR body. Hope this helps.

Different types of birth control will have different effects and of course effects will vary from person to person. Birth control will help regulate your period, reduce it's length most likely, and lighten your flow. In addition, birth control because it deals with your hormone levels is said to help clear up acne. Sometimes a slight weight gain can occur, but it's only about 5 pounds usually and you can easily manage this. You may experience tenderness or soreness of the breasts and mild cramping at first. Consulting with your doctor will help choose which type is best for you. A highly used BC is Ortho Tri Cyclen--it is commonly prescribed t young teens to clear up acne and has mild side effects. :)

Every person's body will react differently. I will assume you are going on the pill, not the shot. Some disadvantages:

- Weight gain or weight loss.
(I actually lost about 5 lbs on it & gained 10 lbs when I got off of it.)
- Nausea
- Bleeding in between periods
- Mood swings

The pill will:
- Regulate your period
- Relieve cramps
- Protect you from getting pregnant by 99% with PERFECT use
- Help acne

According to plannedparenthood.org, the pill can protect against:

- acne
- cancer of the lining of the uterus
- cancer of the ovaries
- ectopic pregnancy
- excess body hair
- iron deficiency anemia that can result from heavy menses
- noncancerous breast growths
- osteoporosis
- ovarian cysts
- premenstrual symptoms, as well as related headaches and depression
- vaginal dryness and painful intercourse related to menopause.

Hope that helped :)
