I believe the differences between colleges and universities are the type of degrees you receive. At a college, you get a lower degree, the associates...and at a university you receive a bachelor's. I suggest you work hard in high school now, and apply to both colleges and universities when the time comes. And if you don't get into the university...go to the college and then transfer.
Good Luck!

i got plenty of D's (i think around 5) and had an overall GPA of 3.33
i had a pretty good SAT score of 1340/1800
i got into UCSD
a transfer to a 4 year is definitely a good idea. if you are in san diego like me, Mesa College has a great TAG program. and you wont lose anything, because you take GE's while in college, and then you get those credits when you transfer, and take courses for your major.
you should try applying anyways though, you might get in. ]
Go ahead and try to apply to some universities. At my college, I am pretty surprised at some of the people who they let in, you never know, they might let you in too. Community college is a good starting spot if you are having trouble getting into a university. Usually community colleges are perceived as a step down from a university and that the graduates aren't as well rounded. But if you can go to a CC for a couple years and get your grades good, I just bet a university would see your improvement and accept you...BTW, I got 2 D's in high school, but managed a good ACT score and had no problem going to the university I wanted. Usually like a 17 or higher gets you accepted. So try studying and taking the standardized tests as well. ]
