cavities

Question Posted Sunday March 11 2007, 2:43 pm

I keep getting cavities and I never had any until about 2 years ago. I have braces (for a little over a year) and I brush my teeth about 3, if not more, times a day. I hate flossing because it hurts my gums and causes them to bleed. And when I was kid I used to eat a lot more candy than I do now.

What can I do to prevent cavities? I really can't stand getting them drilled or the feeling of having one.

thanks

Trust me: when you have braces, you NEED to floss. The more you start flossing, the less it will bleed and it won't hurt as much. When I had braces, it caused me to get a lot more cavities because the braces makes it harder for you to brush certain areas. Go to a CVS, Walgreens, Department store.... pretty much anywhere that sells toothbrushes, and buy something called a "Water Pick". Just ask the person who's working there and they can help you find one in the store. It's like a little toothbrush head that you use before or after brushing and it squirts your teeth with water. It helps wash away any excess food.

You really need to start flossing. You should be brushing gently on the gums so they won't bleed. When you floss, you'll remove plaque from between teeth and under your gumline where your toothbrush can't reach.

If you drink soda, drink less.

If you chew gum, do it less often.
Some brands contain some type of sweetener.. the acid in it will eventually cause a cavity.

Always brush your tongue too, to remove plaque.

You need fluoride toothpaste. Nothing that will whiten, just mainly fluoride.

flossing may be one of the reasons. it will hurt and bleed a little at first, but it will stop. i used to have braces, so i know its a realy pain to floss, but trust me, you will be happy later. also, you can get toothpaste that can help fight cavities. talk to your dentist for the best one. you should also stay away from popcorn and stuff like that that can cause your teeth to crack. curnal-less popcorn is okay

hoped that helped :-D

Bleeding gums is a sign of not flossing enough. If you start flossing, it may bleed a little at first, but eventually it will stop and that should prevent you from getting more cavities.
