word? What's the difference between
affect and effect?
The dictionary isn't helping me.
It's making me more confused.

affect is present tense and effect is past tense ]
Just to add an example which might clarify things:
"It affected him badly" (verb)
"It had A bad effect on him" (noun- hence the use of 'a')

affect is a verb
they stem from the same meaning so, an effect affects something ]
