School is driving me nuts!

Question Posted Friday February 23 2007, 10:15 pm

I have A's in English, History, and Art. My problem is in Pre-Calculus and Physics. I'm in 10th grade.

I feel really RETARDED when it comes to doing work in those classes.

I'm taking all Honors too, and I would drop out and take easier classes but unfortunately it's too late for that now.

I have gotten F's and D's on all my Pre-Cal tests, and we've only had one test in Physics and on that I got a 28%!! I couldn't believe myself and I had stayed awake ALL NIGHT studying. I don't know if cramming is the problem but sometimes cramming is the only solution as I'm busy with the other classes. I don't know...

Basically:
- I don't understand what the frick any of my teachers are talking about in Physics & Pre-Cal, it's gotten to the point where I've given up trying to figure it out and pay attention.
-I've been tutored a LOT - but still no help.
-Every math type of problem I do, I get stuck on it and need someone to guide me through. I think my main problem is self-learning and becoming an independent thinker
-Because I'm often busy I only get to study for tests a night or do before them.
-Teachers love to give pop quizzes, and since I always end up studying night before the test, I fail these too!

I need help and to prove to myself that I'm not stupid.....and that I just need to work harder. I tell myself this but HOW MUCH HARDER CAN I WORK?

Something must be wrong. I even talked to the teachers and they're just like, "Oh just practice more," - that's all I friggen do!

My report looks like this (although, it's 3/4 towards the end, midterm grades can bring you up one grade point)

English: A
Art: A
History: A
Pre-Cal: D
Physics: C

I'm just pissed and need some genuine advice and tips to help me get A's on math & science tests so I can bring up my grades.

Thanks so much guys!!

Love,
the effing retarded one =/

Hey. Well first of all I'd like to say that you're NOT retarded. Math and science (or algebra and biology as I take now, since I'm a freshman) are the subjects I have to work hardest at. Just recently I've found that you're either good at math and science or history and english and you just proved my point. No matter who I meet it's either they're really good at math and science and hate english and history or the opposite like us. It's very rare to find someone who's good at all of them. I guess the brain just works out this way. So what I would do for pre-cal and physics is to just try and go over it whenever you have free time. If you're thinking of watching t.v. just think, hey I've really got to work on these two subjects. Also, (I'm not saying this to offend you, we all go through it =)) maybe you're not studying the way that would help you most. Are you just quickly skimming over the stuff for hours hoping it sticks in and then getting frustrated or do you seriously look over the stuff for hours until you really understand it. Sometimes this is what you have to do. Unfortunately :/. Also, I would try to ask your teachers if they could help you out after school. I know in my school teachers stay after on certain days to help kids who don't get the stuff. They'll be really glad you're willing to work at it and a lot of times they become more leanant towards you when they see you're willing to work hard. It will be hard and boring at first but I'm sure you'll get it soon. And you're NOT retarded if you're in all honors classes. You had to have gotten there somehow =). Oh and wish me luck for next year! Lol. I really hope this helped and good luck! =)

Stay for extra help one day every week for each class until you get it. Teachers usually have extra help days, and it's probably best if you get tutored by your teacher because they teach in a unique way. This way you'll know what they're talking about. Ask if there is any way that you can make up those tests. If not, try extra hard on the tests that you get from now on. Take your time, and recheck your work.

Aww, you're not retarded. Trust me, there is always gonna be something in school, work or life that you're just NOT gonna understand. I don't understand a lot either, but then again, I'm not booksmart. I've never studied a day in my life, but I've gotten good grades. I don't know why.

Anyways, prevent from cramming. Find a special time everyday to try & study for physics & pre-calc. Study for about an hour of those each. The more you study & practice, the more you'll get better at it. To tell you the truth, your physics grade isn't too bad. I'd be happy if I got a C. It's not an A or B, but it's definitely better than a D or an F. You're right in the middle. Just work harder, study harder & practice more & you should be able to get those two subjects down like the others.
