These philosophers all have things to say. It's true that we give up certain rights in order to have the security of the group. We can choose some of that, such as whether to live in a covenant-controlled neighborhood where we can't plant flowers in our yards without prior, written approval. Some of it we can't choose, like we can't murder people, no matter whether or not we agree that it's wrong. We have to strike the right balance for each of us, individually. There are some people who run off to the mountains to escape the needs of the society. There are others who live in cooperative housing units where everything is shared.
