Hallmark wanted an excuse to sell more cards and make a ton of money, and Hershey needed a reason to make heart-shaped chocolate goodies and, yes, make more money
Or, to quote Jim Gaffingan (though not word for word):
"And we give each other those heart-shaped antacids... 'Ohh, I know I make you nauseous; Here's a Tums with HUG ME written on it!!' Or we give each other those 'gamble chocolates'.. 'aw, crud, I got the one filled with toothpaste! I gotta eat eight more to get rod of the taste now..."
Actually, a guy named Saint Valentine was writing a note to his sweetheart when he was on death row and signed the letter "your Valentine". Or something like that. Never really liked the holiday much.
