Acne

Question Posted Saturday February 3 2007, 7:13 pm

I have acne on my face, chest, and back. My dermatoligist told me about Actutane, and I was just wondering if anybody have any information or personal stories about it. Thanks :)

I'm on it right now. I currently take 40 mg. I started out at 20 mg, then my dermatologist increased my dosage to 40 mg.

I do recommend Accutane. However, it does have serious side effects. It can VERY harmful an unborn baby. Therefore, you must not be pregnant or become pregnant while on the drug. It has been linked to depression. Also, it can be damage your liver. It is advised to not drink alcoholic beverages while on Accutane. It has been known to make your cholesterol spike.

You must go to your dermatologist every month. Your blood (A LOT of it) will be drawn monthly. Also, you have to urinate in a cup for a pregnancy test monthly. Your prescription can ONLY be written for a 30-day supply of Accutane.

I warn you, the Ipledge program can be very frustrating. You can be "locked out" of the system for one month if there is an error and you won't be able to get your prescription for thirty days.

The 40mg dosage gives me bad headaches, although it does dry up the oil in my skin. The 20mg doesn't give me the headaches, but it doesn't dry my skin out that well.

Well, I've been on it for a few months, but I've mostly got scarring left. They're very keen on increasing doses, and usually give you half your weight in doses. (ie you weight 100 lbs, they'll give you 50mg) usually, at least. You need blood tests and pregnancy tests every month, and the program I'm on can get a little confusing. If you're in the same case as me, you have to sign up for something on the net to have an account for your pharmacy, but your nurse can do that too if you ask her to.
I didn't have any adverse side effects, and it really works wonderfully!! I had the WORST acne on my face for the longest time, the same set of acne for over a year actually, and nothing else would really help with it, but once I took that pill, I saw results within about a month. It really made me sooo much more confident.
The one thing I did have a problem with, though, was sunburn. I already burned easily, but I really couldn't go into the sun for a very long time, and I highly reccomend having chapstick handy often. =)

Best of luck, and I really hope this was helpful!
