You suck on your partners body part (the neck is the most popular body part I know of.)
They suck on it for a couple seconds and they leave a red mark. After having it there for a while it turns purple (making it look like a bruise.)
But mostly it lasts for about a week.

a hickey is just where the skin usually on a persons neck has been slightly irritated from someone else sucking on it, usually from making out. to give someone a hickey just suck on their skin or neck while making out and it'll get red after a while.
