Question Posted Saturday February 3 2007, 12:22 pm
I start school in 2 days. The problem is that I am pregnant and my morning sickness is horrible. (It really shouldn't be called morning sickness, it should be called ALL DAY AND NIGHT LONG sickness but I digress). I have tried everything to not throw up all the time and so far, nothing is working. All my classes are far away from bathrooms so I won't have the luxury of being close to a toilet.
Does anyone have home remedies that work? Or experience managing morning sickness?
Any help is appreciated.

Been there, done that. Here are some tips. First, you should let your teachers know that you may need to leave class suddenly. If that happens, hopefully they won't try to stop you. If you can't make it out the door, try to be near the trashcan. If you can't even do that, carry around a grocery bag to barf in and a clean shirt in your bag or locker. I know, it sounds gross, but it's a lot better than wearing your own vomit. In order to not get to that point, there are some things you can do. Make sure you are well hydrated. Drink water as much as you can without going overboard. Drink Coke or ginger ale or whatever else feels good. Avoid things that are acidic like orange juice and pasta sauces and maybe avoid caffeine (depends on the person). Eat saltine or soda crackers when you get queasy if it helps. If you need energy but can't stomach food, try Ensure or Boost. Take your prenatal vitamin with a little food or milk if it upsets your stomach. I actually had to go on Flintstones Chewables (2/day) because the prenatal vitamin made me so sick.
If you feel like you're gonna hurl, get to a bathroom or recepticle. Then try opening your mouth wide and breathing. You can't gag and breathe at the same time, so breathing deeply sometimes helps.
Other than that, there's an accupressure point on the underside of your wrist that sometimes helps. You can just push on your wrist just below where your palm starts. Some people find that helpful. If that does work for you, some pharmacies sell elastic bracelets with little knob things that put pressure on that point for people who are travelling or have morning sickness. Know that 'morning' sickness tends to diminish later in the pregnancy. Carry around a bottle of water if you can and either some of those Oral B Brush-up (finger tooth brush things) or Listerine dissolving strips.
It's so worth it when you get to the end, but I'm sorry you're so sick. :(
I also came across a book called "Managing Morning Sickness" by Miriam Erick, R.D., M.S. Here's a link for more information about it: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
