I don't know how long you've been dating, but when my boyfriend and I had nothing to say online we would play the questions game. We'd ask about favorite memories, games, cookies. Sometimes we'd do the whole which you rather game too. These games would have us talking for hours and we'd sometimes start profound conversations on some the answers. I hope this helps you out!

Ask him how his day went, tell him about yours.
Talk about things he enjoys, that's bound to get him started talking.
Casually complain about how annoying your brother/sister/teacher/whoever is.
