freshman,senior
i am a freshman in highschool and there's this senior, *John. i knew him all throughout middle school until i was in 8th grade and we just seemed to drift apart. i always used to say "when your a senior, i'll be a freshman & you'll drive me!'" as a joke. now i really am a freshman and i had tottally forgotten about him until one day i walked into the cafeteria in the morning and before i sat down i caught his eye. we looked at eachother for a really long time but neither of us were going to say anything so i just smiled and sat down. i couldn't stop thinking about for the rest of the week. i accidentaly bumped into him in the hall and one of my friends grabbed me before i had a chance to say anything. let me just say before i go any further, we were best friends and when i knew him before i was WAYY to young to even think about him. it always seemed as if he made an effort to sit a couple of seats down from me in the mornings in the caf.
what could i say to start a conversation?

Tell him jokingly that you thought he was going to drive you.
Realistically, he used to be your best friend. You should have SOME sort of idea what to talk about, such as how are you, for starters, and how is your family, etc.

just say "hey, whats up, haven`t talked to you in a while, how`ve you been ?" &stuff like that.
