1. Get motivated. First, you have to WANT to get good grades. You have to be willing to use up a lot of time and effort because doing well in school is hard work!
2. Stay organized. Keep all of your papers and handouts, etc in a binder LABELED. Dont just throw them into your backpack aimlessly. Actually have a binder for EACH individual class and extra paper. Always come to class prepared - thats one way to get good grades.
3. Do your homework! I know I sound like a broken record here..but seriously, school isnt that hard. The best thing you can do to get good grades is to do all of your homework completely and accurately and ON TIME. Homework counts for so much and can be the difference between getting a D and an A.
4. Put in a lot of effort. Especially in class. Its really important to get a lot out of your time as boring as it may be. Take notes and make sure you ASK QUESTIONS if you dont understand! Thats the best thing you can do. Just think, you HAVE to go to school no matter what..so why not put effort in while your there instead of wasting time?
5. Get help. Thats what teachers are for! A teacher should always be willing to help you. Stay after school when you dont understand something and want them to explain it further. You will probably learn better because its one-on-one. If you dont like your teacher or theyre not very accomidating, get a tutor. Theyre not too much of a price to pay for the benefit that comes out of it. Dont get some professional adult - get a high school student who is older, a senior? Ask your guidance counselor for a list of tutors - they usually have a list of student tutors. Or get a friend/family member to tutor you.
6. Study. If you have a big quiz/test coming up, failing it will hurt you a lot. And you fail because you dont study. So, thats why it pays to be organized. You can just flip through your binder and find all of your old worksheets, etc. which will help you study.

Either way, it really helps to be in a group of people that support your progress and positive change. Ask a couselor at school and a teacher for their assistance and advice. Get into peer support groups. Is there an underlying issue? Why did your grades slip down in the first place? Deal with any problems you have been trying to ignore or get help dealing with anything that is eating at you from the inside. Ask a friend or parent to sit down with you one hour a day and talk, encourage, help with homework. Remember though, this is about you and your future and do it for yourself and no one else!!! Are you turning in all of your assignments? Are they done to the best of your ability? A good way to get work done but still have a good time is to have a study session with a friend-do worksheets together, ask him or her to read over a paper you wrote, and make up fun games to study for tests. That's what helps me to keep my grades up; I'm on scholarship so I have to.
Ask your teachers if there's any extra credit you can do to raise your grade, and if they have any extra studying materials you could borrow to prepare for tests. If teachers see that you WANT to do better, they'll be bending over backwards to help.
Good luck! [ misskatherine's advice column | Ask misskatherine A Question ]
