getting ready for dodgeball

Question Posted Friday January 19 2007, 1:03 am

I can't throw to save my life. I talked to a friend about it, he pitches, and he told me to do push-ups to help. That is another problem - I struggle to do ten solid push-ups. Any alternate suggestions? I've been told the shoulder press would help, because I'm pretty week with that muscle group. What do you think? My back muscles, the ones for pull ups, are a lot stronger, but I'm not sure if that off-set balance has anything to do with it. Thanks.

P.S. - I haven't seen a doctor about it, but my shoulder bones click when I lift my arms straight up and bring them back down, just at the point where they are at a L shape with my body. Should that go away with weight lifting or would that require medical attention. Thanks in advance.

Shoulders are important but if your shoulders become too massive then your range of motion will be affected. Push ups target primarily the chest and front deltoids- they're good to throw in and the only way to get better at them (besides lifting weights if that isn't an option) is just keep doing them.

A lot of one's throwing velocity actually comes from how well they are able to push off with their legs...you ask any pitcher and they'll tell you just how important it is to have leg strength. Also you probably are having trouble because you have an "Up and down" throwing motion instead of a "Whipping" motion which gives better accuracy and speed.

I am not a doctor so I can't tell you what really requires medical attention- but I think at your next checkup you should mention your shoulder problem. Weightlifting never makes shoulder problems go away- just makes them worse; I've partially torn my rotator cuff before so believe me when I say that it isn't worth whatever you're striving for to have shoulder problems.

Also- Your back muscles are supposed to be stronger than your shoulders.
