To run a disk scan, go to your Start Menu and to All Programs. Next, scroll up to Accessories, and to System Tools. Once you have done this, you should see "Disk Cleanup." Click on it, and there you go. :)
As YG said, you may want to defrag your computer first. It will get rid of any fragmented files, before cleaning it up. You can find "Disk Defragment" in System Tools too. [ LagunaBabe's advice column | Ask LagunaBabe A Question ]
rick505 answered Sunday January 14 2007, 3:43 pm: if you're not very good with computers, how do you know you need to run a disc scan? Are you having a problem that needs to be fixed? All the disc scan does is clean up remnants of deleted files and reorganize your system. if you are having problems you should be more specific. [ rick505's advice column | Ask rick505 A Question ]

All Programs
Accessories
System Tools
Disc cleaner
Click on disc cleaner
Instructions are simple from there.
If you have never done it before you might also want
to run disc defragmenter after you clean the disc.
It is right there in the same place as the cleaner.
It will put all your files and folders back where they belong, and may speed you up a little. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
