Question Posted Wednesday January 10 2007, 9:36 pm
I know i'm getting an ear infection, i've had numerous growing up so i know what they feel like without having to be told by a professional. My mom is supposed to be making me a doctors appointment to get something done about it, but hasn't had the time to make the appointment. I really need to do something about the pain. Does anyone know of an over the counter medicine or at home remedy for an ear infection? I'm seriously willing to try anything.
Also, how can you tell if your getting strep throat or something of the sort. My glands on the right side of my throat are swollen and it hurts severely to swallow. I was told this could be causing my earache, or vise versa. Does anyone know how to get my throat to stop hurting also?
Thanks!

Holding a warm rag next to your ear might help. Hydrogen peroxide might help an infection to clear up, but it won't help the pain. The sore throat is probably connected to the ear ache. Acetaminophen(Tylenol) is best for an ear ache. The only homemade antibiotic I can think of is colloidal silver, but I doubt you'll be able to get silver rods before actual antibiotics. Sabine answered Thursday January 11 2007, 12:21 am: Poor dear! You can drink hot tea to help your throat. Suck on hard candies or cough drops, anything with sugars which coat the throat. You can gargle with salt water or 1/2 water, 1/2 peroxide to try to kill any bacteria in your throat. You can apply a warm compress to the area just below your ear and near your neck and massage there. You can use things like sucrettes or cloraseptic, which have pain-relieving properties. Regarding your appointment, perhaps you could make an appointment for yourself? I don't know how practical it is. Ask your mom if you can do it. Also, ask her for Advil or Tylenol to help with the pain. Are there other people, like relatives who could take you to the doctor?
Good luck.

I'm not sure why someone brought up the dangerous and illegal idea of getting antibiotics from Mexico, but as she said, please don't do it. Nor should you pour warm oil into your ear, as she also said could damage your hearing. She mentioned that you should take 800 mg of Advil. This is also a bad idea. If you are 15/f, you may be slight of frame and 800 mg of Advil may affect you differently than others. Advil in high doses can cause kidney damage and intestinal bleeding. You don't want to throw up blood, so please be careful with the Advil. Do not exceed the recommended dosages on the bottle, which for an adult is 400 mg, without your doctor's okay. Never go over on Tylenol, either, please, because even a small overdose can kill your liver. Sabine [ Sabine's advice column | Ask Sabine A Question ]

Nor do I recommend home remedies. My mom used to put warm oil in my ear and it HURT. An ENT doctor later told me that it had caused a small loss in hearing as well.
If 800 mg. of Advil (that's more than what is listed on the box...it's the prescription dose) doesn't help your pain, then the only thing that will is a narcotic which must be prescribed by a physician.
