muscles on thighs

Question Posted Sunday January 7 2007, 10:48 pm

i have almost the opposite problem of most people - my thighs are pure muscle, not fat - which is A LOT harder to get rid of. this sounds weird i know, but i really want to get rid of some of the muscle. i'm slim but i worked out a lot especially my thighs, so now they're huge in comparison to the rest of my body. how do i get rid of the muscle there?? it's so much compared to the rest of my legs.

I wouldn't advise purposely trying to lose muscle. Perhaps you could do some toning, though--Pilates and yoga are said to lengthen muscles, giving you a slimmer appearance. As mentioned below, lighter weights with more repetitions should also help you have longer, leaner muscles, rather than bulky ones.

You might not be able to change them dramatically. Try to value the body you have, hard as it may seem. I know, I know, you hear that too many times. But it's the truth.

Think of what your body can do--it's strong, it moves, it functions beautifully. It can repair itself. It acts logically for the most part. What's not to love?

Easier said than done, I realise. But if attempting to obtain leaner muscle fails, well, you might just have to accept what you have.

Good luck, though. I hope it works.

Alot of women, I know in the gym have this problem, you cant "shed" the muscle, if you stop,it will turn to "flab", but try this instead of going up in "weight" with your legs, drop down in weight, add more rep's..this will keep your legs strong and toned without really making them biggger....and start workin your upper body, with light weight..then over time, your body will become more porportionate...I'ts hard, believe me, it takes dedecation...and knowing when not to over do it, I guess go to local gym and ask a trainer, his or her's opinion also...to put you on the right track...hope this helps you out...Good Luck

Well, there are two possibilities. Perhaps if you stop using the muscles so much (walking, running, lunges, or whatever you do), they will atrophy, or shrink a little. The other possibility is that you have genetically well-muscled thighs and there's nothing you can do about it.

Before you go trying to get rid of muscle, remember, muscle not only helps you move, but it is the center of your metabolism. It regulates fat burning. Lowering your body's muscle mass also means you will be lowering your metabolism and you might gain weight in other areas as a result.
