Is it SAFE?

Question Posted Wednesday December 27 2006, 12:23 am

k I'm new into ordering stuff on the internet and I was wondering if it's safe. There's this thing I want on ebay and ebay looks pretty safe and real so is it reliable? Can I order stuff on ebay without getting scammed? I'm just careful ever since I got scammed on this one time when I ordered something. Plus my mom doesn't trust things being ordered from the internet so it's kind of hard to convince her. -__-

hey, well on the internet you never know. it depends on the person your trying to buy an item from. some people just scam you and once they get your money they never send the item. before you buy or bid anything, make sure the person your dealing with seems reliable =].

The previous responder says that Paypal can reimburse you, and this is technically true - however, they are under no OBLIGATION to reimburse you, and if they simply decide not to then you have no recourse. The safest way to make an online purchase is via credit card - CREDIT, not debit.

eBay is mostly reliable, but scams exist, and it is possible to cheat the system by artificially inflating one's scores. The best you can do is hedge your bets. Don't order anything too costly, and pay for it with credit card only; if you get scammed on a credit card purchase, they can withhold payment and charge you only a small service fee.

If it were totally unreliable, the system would break down under its own weight. Scams are the exception, not the rule. Just be careful and smart, and you should be OK.

Ebay, check their feedback. 100+ is a good, solid seller. Also, pay with Paypal - if you are scammed, then they can reimburse you.

As for regular sites, check these websites:

www.bbb.org - and search for the URL. If they're not listed, don't shop there.

www.whois.net - and search for the URL. If the domain comes back with a URL outside the US, then that site is shady.

My advice regarding ebay is to check out the seller. The higher the rating the better your experience will be. When you look to buy something, the sellers name will come up with a number following that...that is what needs to be higher. Now, I am not saying that lower numbered people are not good...but they do not have the experience to back them up. Regrading other web-sites, I would stick with the more well known stores, that way it is relatively safe. I would also following purchase print out the receipt. I hope that this helps, and enjoy shopping on-line.
