my computer is runnning too slow how can i fix it?
-i already deleted unused programs and music
-i also hav fast internet(dsl) and it still lags
-i hav yahoo virus protecting so it should hav a virus
-wat can i do?
-i hav heard of downloading a disk cleaner should i do that
Disk cleanup - go into my computer, right click on C drive, hit properties then disk cleanup. When it runs throgh, check everything, and then hit cleanup & then yes. Let that run. That should free up memory.
Another thing that you can do is go into the C drive, double click windows folder, find the prefetch folder, and delete everything in that folder. It's just a list of everything you've went into, and really isnt necessary to keep around.
Defragment your computer. In order to do this you go to start, program files, accessories, system tools, then defragment. What that basically does is pushes everything together and gets everything grouped together so it isnt so spaced out, which can cause your computer to run slower.
Another thing is to go into your internet browser, and hit tools, then internet properties, and delete your history, temporary internet files & your cookies.
Some of the best virus programs I have come across are Zone Alarm Suite (www.download.com) Freedom, AdAware(www.download.com), & PC-illin(www.download.com)
Also. sometimes when you start up your computer, you may have programs that start automatically which cause your computer to be slower, in order to fix that you can go to start, run, type in msconfig, and then go to startup, and uncheck everything. then reboot and nothing will start upon startup. Which will enable rebooting to become faster.
If you're really good with computers and know what you're doing you can also go to start, run nd then type in regedit and clean your registry(delete everything that you dont use anymore, things that are uninstalled, or things that look like they might be a virus.)
Generally when you go into regedit you click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then software, and just hit delete to delete the items.
If you download a virus program and have a virus and it wont delete, the way to manually delete it would be to go into your C drive, then windows folder, then system32 folder. Thats where most are stored.
If you do find a virus, you can google the name of it and tyle " "name of file here" removal instructions"
( if that link doesn't work, go to www.download.com and install Ad-Aware SE Personal)
Go there & download it. It's a totally secure site & the program is free, no strings attached. It'll get rid of unnecessary Spyware, Adware, and "cookie grabbers". It also alerts you of Trojans and can occassionally delete them!
Don't rely entirely on Yahoo. Get yourself a firewall, and USE IT!! If you have XP, there should be one on your computer already. Activate it!!!
Additionally, defragment your hard drive regularly (if you don't know how, message me and I'll tell you how) and if you use LimeWire.. be really careful. Run virus scans frequently (you really should anyways!), and uninstall the program when you don't need it.
If all else fails, you may just need more RAM. Most (relatively) old computers have around 128-256 MB. 512MB-1GB cards are even better, and they're very inexpensive (under $100 for a 1GB, I believe) and that will help significantly as well.
batteredxdreams answered Friday December 8 2006, 7:15 pm: I think you might have a virus. Just because your virus scan says there are no viruses, there still could be some on there. I'd download a later version of a good virus scan and try again. [ batteredxdreams's advice column | Ask batteredxdreams A Question ]
theymos answered Friday December 8 2006, 7:13 pm: there's a bunch of different things you can do. First, download spybot:search and destroy at: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
install, update, and run it. then go to: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
and run housecall to see if you have viruses. Then go to Start>all programs>accesories>system tools>disk cleanup and run that. Then go to start>all prgarms>accesories>system tools>defragmentor and run that. Then go to pcpitstop.com, register, run tests, and follow their advice. Then go to [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) and download, install, and run "advanced windowscare". You can go to start>run and type msconfig, this will allow you to significantly speed up your computer, though you could really mess it up, too.
