I saw an Above the Influence commercial about people who Slom [It stands for Sticking Leeches on Myself] and it mentioned kids doing it at schools and parties just like smoking or drugs. I was wondering, why do kids do it? What exactly is it? How does it affect them? and where do they get the leeches?
I've never heard of this before so I'm just curious.
Originated from an "Above the Influence" that showed kids discussing the then-fictional activity with the intention to illustrate the power of peer pressure to make people do things they would otherwise think were ridiculous.
Ironically since the commercials started airing some have actually tried the activity and it has become minorly popular in some circles.
Some kids may actually enjoy it, others presumably do it because their friends do it, while others do it to make a statement ("I choose what I do with my own body, no matter how strange it may seem to you").

People find the leeches in local ponds or creeks. I live in Florida and I have witnessed many people SLOM, however, no one has been doing it as openly as they show it in the commercials. The feeling you get from SLOMing is very relaxed, almost to the point of passing out (Probably from blood loss). There is also a highly releving sensation once you take them off.
So to answer your question, it is real and dangerous, but very, very fun. [ duhhhhhh's advice column | Ask duhhhhhh A Question ]

1. Stands for Sticking Leeches On Myself
2. A series of decisions that sucks the life out of a person.
- verb
1. To engage in an activity without thinking.
2. To make a decision based on wannabeitis.
Example: Those who engage in SLOMming often fear not fitting in or simply enjoy being a sheep in the flock of life. Notable sheep have included: fans of White Snake, people that wear parachute pants, and that 20-year-old guy who still hangs out at all the high school parties.
meaning
While SLOMming isn't "really" going on, some people do get sucked into the influence of peer pressure. Of course, most people make good decisions most of the time and are able to step back and avoid sticky situations. Others rely on the crowd to direct them. They do things they'd rather not, and even convince themselves that it's all good.
sloming answered Tuesday December 5 2006, 9:22 pm: its a joke. ? they are just trying to show how stupid drugs and smoking are. They are comparing drugs to sloming because sloming is absolutely the dummest thing anyone could do because it's harmful to your body. [ sloming's advice column | Ask sloming A Question ]
TEENAGExHEARTS answered Sunday December 3 2006, 8:27 pm: i thought the same thing and was totally grossed out. but i'm almost positive that they made it up just to show people how stupid doing drugs is. i saw the commercial with my mom and i asked her about it and she said that she thought it was made up.
TinkerbellsHelp answered Sunday December 3 2006, 8:19 pm: I'm not sure, but I think it was a joke and no kids do it. I think that the Above the Influence people were trying to get at that drugs are stupid its ridiculous how people do it just to fit in. I am pretty sure they made SLOMing up. I saw the commercial and thought the same thing at first. [ TinkerbellsHelp's advice column | Ask TinkerbellsHelp A Question ]
