Slom

Question Posted Sunday December 3 2006, 5:24 pm

I saw an Above the Influence commercial about people who Slom [It stands for Sticking Leeches on Myself] and it mentioned kids doing it at schools and parties just like smoking or drugs. I was wondering, why do kids do it? What exactly is it? How does it affect them? and where do they get the leeches?

I've never heard of this before so I'm just curious.

Okay, there is a website that should tell you everything you want to know: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

"Stands for Sticking Leeches On Myself.

Originated from an "Above the Influence" that showed kids discussing the then-fictional activity with the intention to illustrate the power of peer pressure to make people do things they would otherwise think were ridiculous.

Ironically since the commercials started airing some have actually tried the activity and it has become minorly popular in some circles.

Some kids may actually enjoy it, others presumably do it because their friends do it, while others do it to make a statement ("I choose what I do with my own body, no matter how strange it may seem to you").

Slomming is not illegal. However, it does not provide any sort of high. "

Actually, SLOMing is real. Although they play it off as a metaphor, it is in occurance in many high schools/ middle schools, especially in the South. People find the leeches in local ponds or creeks. I live in Florida and I have witnessed many people SLOM, however, no one has been doing it as openly as they show it in the commercials. The feeling you get from SLOMing is very relaxed, almost to the point of passing out (Probably from blood loss). There is also a highly releving sensation once you take them off.
So to answer your question, it is real and dangerous, but very, very fun.

I've actually been searching for answers to the same question and found this. According to the website www.abovetheinfluence.org, which can answer many questions for you, SLOMming is:

1. Stands for Sticking Leeches On Myself
2. A series of decisions that sucks the life out of a person.

- verb

1. To engage in an activity without thinking.
2. To make a decision based on wannabeitis.

Example: Those who engage in SLOMming often fear not fitting in or simply enjoy being a sheep in the flock of life. Notable sheep have included: fans of White Snake, people that wear parachute pants, and that 20-year-old guy who still hangs out at all the high school parties.

meaning

While SLOMming isn't "really" going on, some people do get sucked into the influence of peer pressure. Of course, most people make good decisions most of the time and are able to step back and avoid sticky situations. Others rely on the crowd to direct them. They do things they'd rather not, and even convince themselves that it's all good.

SLOM…a reminder for us not to believe the hype.

So, it isnt actually something that kids do, its a metaphor for following others' leads no matter how off the wall it is.

its a joke. ? they are just trying to show how stupid drugs and smoking are. They are comparing drugs to sloming because sloming is absolutely the dummest thing anyone could do because it's harmful to your body.

Sweetheart, it's like a metaphor...sticking leaches on yourself so they can suck your blood is stupid and gross and they're trying to get the point across that drugs are stupid and gross too.

I'm not sure, but I think it was a joke and no kids do it. I think that the Above the Influence people were trying to get at that drugs are stupid its ridiculous how people do it just to fit in. I am pretty sure they made SLOMing up. I saw the commercial and thought the same thing at first.
