Ok so lately I've been having this impending feeling that life is temporary and I might lose someone I love or die and never see them again -ever- and the thought is really depressing me.
I used to believe in god but I grew away from that a while ago and I've tried to go back to my ignorance but it's failed because I simply can't convince myself or have anyone convince me. Especially since I wrote it all off as false and now reading about the religions faults makes it worse.
Existentialism keeps coming up and it's seems like the accepted logical way in the scientific community and it's driving me insane because I am getting anxious and at the same time I really don't want to get used to the anxiety and accept the fact that I might never see my mom or dad or boyfriend again if they died today.
So is there any other theory out there that hasn't been put down yet and seems pretty reasonable? I'm just wondering at all if there's any room for the afterlife in the modern scientific world? Could you please give me a few theories.
I would appreciate if you could refrain by trying to convert me to your religion and keep your answers as factual as possible. Thank you so much.

I had those feelings before. Okay we believe that when you die and you havn't accepted Jesus into your heart you would go to hell instead of heaven. We don't make it up we read it straight out of the Bible. People have changed it and added different stuff. But please do this. Pray this prayer Dear Lord Jesus
Forgive me for my sins and when I die take me to heaven. Amen. If you do that you will go to heaven when you die no doubt. Even if you stop believing once you have done that you will always go to heaven. Thanks I will for sure pray for you. [ kiran's advice column | Ask kiran A Question ]

It's like air, we don't see it - but we believe and know it's there, right? If you pick up a Bible and begin reading, you will find so many prophecies that have been fulfilled and there are still some to come. Death does exist and there is a chance that you will never see loved ones again. For those who aren't saved will spend forever eternity in the lake of fire. I know it's hard to grasp, but once you take hold of the truth, instead of these scientific studies - you'll know. A person asked me once before how I KNOW that what I believe is right. To prove it. The bible. Christianity isn't a head thing - it's a heart thing. You feel it in your heart, not your head. We have doubts - but that's Satan. I urge you to come and know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. It is the most important decision anyone can ever make in their life. I don't know you - but I'm going to be praying for you. While I am not a practitioner, they do have some interesting takes on many of the stumbling blocks that give some people problems with Christianity/Judaism/Islam and others. In a sense they believe there is one God, and it is this same God who is present in one form or another in most (all?) religions, and that most religions are transitory. Many of its beliefs are, of course, considered heretical by other religions and as such followers have had to endure a history of persecution.
Agnosticism is a pretty broad umbrella that covers a lot of potential opinions, though I'm not sure I would qualify it as a religion itself.
I am not sure what to tell you about the presence, or lack, of an afterlife. I would say for you to believe in what you feel is right. However, I hope that you realise that there is a difference in wanting to believe in life after death and hoping its true even though you think it isnt, and truly believing in the afterlife. You may need to embrace what you dont want to accept - that there is no afterlife, even if youy dislike the thought. That belief is up to you IMO.
Also, if you've already 'left the fold' so to speak and have embarked on a journey to find what it is you DO believe, then IMO you might as well be fast and loose with specifics. There is no reason that you cannot believe in modern science and reasoning, believe in a God that isn't bound by one religion or another, and however you decide to feel the truth is on the after life - in fact, you could even be ambigous on that for now, many are (more towards agnosticism on that I suppose). I myself feel that the only time you need to worry about being 'exact' and sweating the details, is when you ARE trying to 'toe the line' in an established religious tradition, where it is required. If you've wandered away from a major religion, just explore feelings/facts/whatever, and don't worry about 'am I believing what is true?' - just go what you believe in your heart. Either you'll find something outside the major religions that represents you (atheism, agnosticism, or whatever), or you'll go back to the religion you've left...and you can pick up where you left off /shrug. While it can be stated as factual that organized religion is a creation of mankind, the existence of G-d and the afterlife is not subject to logical scientific analysis either in it's proof or disproof.
In other words, to be an Atheist requires one to have as much faith as being a Deist of one sort or another.
Robert A. Heinlein once said, "...why worry about it, you'll find out soon enough."
That quote is a very good summation of Agnosticism, which is the true Scientific philosophy. It basically says that the questions are not answerable by logical, scientific analysis, therefore one can not settle on any one answer whatsoever.
That doesn't prevent one from participating in one's religion at all. You can still go to church or synagogue or mosque or temple or whatever and comfort and be comforted by other people.
Some people find this kind of comfort in their drinking buddies or sewing circle or whatever... but I myself think there's a lot to be said for the moral framework of a religion, if nothing else.
The world is more filled with wonder than any of us can even imagine to imagine... we take as routine today things that would seem magical even fifty years ago... Who knows what discoveries the future will bring? Maybe even some answers to those questions. In the meantime, get on with your life and appreciate each day as it comes.
