Ok so lately I've been having this impending feeling that life is temporary and I might lose someone I love or die and never see them again -ever- and the thought is really depressing me.
I used to believe in god but I grew away from that a while ago and I've tried to go back to my ignorance but it's failed because I simply can't convince myself or have anyone convince me. Especially since I wrote it all off as false and now reading about the religions faults makes it worse.
Existentialism keeps coming up and it's seems like the accepted logical way in the scientific community and it's driving me insane because I am getting anxious and at the same time I really don't want to get used to the anxiety and accept the fact that I might never see my mom or dad or boyfriend again if they died today.
So is there any other theory out there that hasn't been put down yet and seems pretty reasonable? I'm just wondering at all if there's any room for the afterlife in the modern scientific world? Could you please give me a few theories.
I would appreciate if you could refrain by trying to convert me to your religion and keep your answers as factual as possible. Thank you so much.
Your question directly relates to Metaphysics which really is a system of all good questions which have no verifiable answers.
While it can be stated as factual that organized religion is a creation of mankind, the existence of G-d and the afterlife is not subject to logical scientific analysis either in it's proof or disproof.
In other words, to be an Atheist requires one to have as much faith as being a Deist of one sort or another.
Robert A. Heinlein once said, "...why worry about it, you'll find out soon enough."
That quote is a very good summation of Agnosticism, which is the true Scientific philosophy. It basically says that the questions are not answerable by logical, scientific analysis, therefore one can not settle on any one answer whatsoever.
That doesn't prevent one from participating in one's religion at all. You can still go to church or synagogue or mosque or temple or whatever and comfort and be comforted by other people.
Some people find this kind of comfort in their drinking buddies or sewing circle or whatever... but I myself think there's a lot to be said for the moral framework of a religion, if nothing else.
The world is more filled with wonder than any of us can even imagine to imagine... we take as routine today things that would seem magical even fifty years ago... Who knows what discoveries the future will bring? Maybe even some answers to those questions. In the meantime, get on with your life and appreciate each day as it comes.
Today is a gift, that's why its called "The Present"

Do you think horoscopes are true in any way?
One university professor likes to pass out what he tells his students are personalized horoscopes and asks them to rate how accurate they are. Most students rate them as highly accurate. Then he asks the students to pass the horoscopes to their neighbors, then everyone finds out that the "personalized" horoscopes were all identical!
If you want to believe in such things, you will make the facts fit the description.
The real giveaway is that the newspapers put the horoscopes on the funny pages...

My boyfriend gets really bad blood noses.. sometimes up to 4 or 5 a day!
Someone told him that he can go to the doctor and get something inside his nose lasered to stop the nose bleeding but he doesn't want to go to the doctor.
He either gets lots of little ones a few times a day or it bleeds lots and has less blood noses a day.
He's never smoked and neither do I so I don't think that could be a problem.. although his dad smokes but he doesn't like it so he stays away from it.
His diet is pretty healthy and he's an active person, he's 20 years old if that helps.
Why could he be getting blood noses? The weather is only just starting to heat up where we live so what could be the problem?
Thanks :)
I used to get a lot of nosebleeds when I was younger. People say that most nosebleeds are started by nose-picking, but mine would come for no good reason.
I had a nosebleed cauterized once. It not only did not help in lowering the frequency of my bleeds, but it was rather unpleasant too.
What finally DID help is when one doctor suggested I use decongestants. Nosebleeds come from the mucus membranes in the nose which get all swollen up and engorged with blood when you're congested. Decongestants shrink the swelling and reduce the pressure on the small blood vessels in the tissues.
Since I've started using decongestants when I've got a stuffy nose, I've had very few nosebleeds.
Hope this helps your boyfriend some.

i like him he knows that and i think he likes me we flirt but why won't he ask me out?
all the other girls that like him he tries to avoid but not me i guess he doesn't think i'm ugly but still i'm confused about his feelings what do you think?
thank so much!
My guess is that he'd probably like to ask you out, but since you two are good friends he's afraid that if you were to say "no" you won't be friends anymore.
This is the 21st century, you might want to consider asking *him* out on a date. That takes some of the pressure off of him.
Best wishes!

I have an extremely bad toothache. Like i want to cry thats how bad it hurts. I told my mom and she said it will feel better in a couple days and that was 2 days ago and i feel 50% worse now. I hate dentist but it hurts so bad im willing to let them do whatever they have to to make this feel better. But i cant get to one because of my parents. Is there anything out there i can buy that will help me feel better? Ive tried oragel and tylenol but nothing has worked.
thank you. By the way is my wisdom tooth or whatever tooth is in the back.
You need to go to a dentist, and I don't understand why your parents won't take you.
This sounds a lot like child abuse or neglect to me.
Tell them that you need to have an emergency dental appointment. If your parents still refuse, you might want to consider calling 911 and getting the paramedics and police involved.
Your oral health doesn't just mean keeping your teeth, but problems in your mouth can cause permanent damage to other organs in your body, like your heart. You need to get treated, one way or another.
Hope it all works out for you.

Are there any orthodox Jews who can answer this question for me?
A neighbor built what appears to be a big plywood box a bit bigger than a car in his driveway.
It has what I think is Hebrew writing on the side.
Can anyone tell me what the heck they are doing? I don't think they want to talk about it so I am asking here. Any help?
It's a sukkah.
Jews build, then eat and sometimes even sleep in sukkahs during the festival of Sukkos which starts tonight and lasts for eight days.
Its in commemoration of the times when the Jews were wandering in the desert for forty years after the Exodus from Egypt.
It is actually a very big mitzvah (good deed) to have guests in one's sukkah, so your neighbor may in fact enjoy your coming over to visit and learn.

ok, giant eagle is a grocery store in my area. so, no one else is gonna really know the answer to this question unless they have a giant eagle in their area.
how old do you have to be to get a Giant Eagle Advantage card?
thanks much in advance!
They make no mention of an age restriction on their website
http://www.gianteagle.com/main/geacinfo.jsp?bmUID=1037282195862
The nature of frequent shopping cards is that they're a marketing tool. Stores use them to try to make you spend more money at their store and also to track what you buy so they can market to you more effectively.
I shouldn't think they'd have a problem, per se, with giving a card to anyone who has money to spend in their store.
However, there might be an issue with the fact that minors can not enter into a legally binding contract. That should really only be a problem if you want to cash checks and the like.
I would suggest that you go to your local Giant Eagle and fill out an application. Don't fill out the parts about checks if all you want is the discounts and offers. That should save you some trouble.
As my father always said, the worst they can tell you is "no".
Best Wishes.

I dont know what my stupid little brother did to it,
but now it wont let me open it,
it says An interal application error has occured, which means WHAT?
and how do i fix it!!!
Sounds like something's hung up on your computer.
Have you tried restarting it? That usually fixes most problems like this.
Sometimes you have to restart more than once.
Or perhaps it has to do with the file that's being played, try to play another file instead.
If these don't work, then the problem's likely a little more complicated. You might have to check out Microsoft's Knowledge Base at their website.
P.S. I doubt your brother did it, computers do weird things all on their own sometimes.
Best Wishes.

Hi, I'm 17/f and I'm worried. How can you tell if your wisdom teeth are going to grow in properly, and does anyone know the amount of space you will need for them to grow? Not precise, but about how much? thanks.
There's really no hard and fast answer to the first part of your question. It depends on a lot of factors like the size of your mouth and teeth, whether you've lost any other teeth, etc.
In most developed countries, where the food is soft and dental hygiene is good, the third molars don't have enough room to erupt properly.
You should ask your dentist, who may have you consult with an oral surgeon. You'll need to have an x-ray to see where all your teeth are and how they're developing.
If there is a problem, the earlier you have the surgery, the less pain and recovery you'll have.
I had my wisdom teeth out before they ever bothered me on the recommendation of my dentist and two oral surgeons. I slept through one day using Tylenol with Codeine but didn't need the pain meds after the one day.
My brother, on the other hand, waited until his teeth began to hurt before he did anything. He had a much tougher time recovering afterwards.
So, to summarize, go see your dentist and get the ball rolling.
Best Wishes.

I'm "Advanced" Sex Ed. in school. Advanced is just when you go more in depth to what you should feel and/or expect in sex. My teacher encouradged us to go home and take a mirror to look at our "parts". So I went home took a compact and looked down there, only to discover that my Labia Minora are light brown. I know that's not normal compared to the light pink pictures we saw. I hardly ever masterbate,I'm a virgin, and am about 99% sure I don't have an infection. They aren't sore, swollen, or even tender. I have a regular skin tone if you're wondering. Why are my labia brown?
The answer to your question would be the same as to the questions, "Why do some people have red hair?", or "Why do some people's ears attach at the bottom?"
The answer is normal variation.
The only person who looks just like the illustration in an anatomy textbook is the model for the illustration.
So don't get upset if what you see doesn't match exactly with what's in the book; we're all different and that's what makes the world wonderful!

What's an "Emergency Pill"? When do you take it? How much does it cost? Does it have to be prescribed? Why do you take it?
Do you mean an emergency contraception pill?
Its supposed to be taken within the first 72 hours after unprotected intercourse to prevent a pregnancy.
Whether or not you need a prescription varies from country to country. This Wikipedia article has a listing of the rules and debates in various countries.

And here's another useful website on the subject:

sometimes my freinds and i will be watchin a movie and i will say somethin and my one friend will just sit there and not say anythin. like i may say i like her dress on drew barrymore and she will just sit there.
why does she do that and not say anythin? i know she hears me cause other people respond to me.
Well, first off I hope that you're talking about watching videos at home. Talking out loud in a movie theatre would be very, very rude.
My guess is that your friend wants to watch the movie and not miss anything because of talking. She might want to talk about the dress or whatever after the movie's over rather than while it's still playing.
Of course, the way to be sure would to be to ask her why she didn't respond to your comments.

My older brother, 19 years old, is going to school at the naval academy. He is home right now for the summer. He doesn't do much to help out. He just sleeps at our house, and eats our food. He lays on the couch all day and watches cartoons and goes out with his friends (without telling us) so sometimes we find ourselves without a car because he took it. He doesn't go to church with us. He ate 2 gallons of our icecream in just a few days. And at dinner tonight, my mom changed the channel before we sat down, so my brother went upstairs to watch what he had on before instead of eating with us. When my mom told him to come down, he said he wasn't hungry. I just want to yell at him and tell him to get his act together, but I don't think it's my place. What do I do?
Your brother's an Annapolis cadet? That's something to be very proud of and I offer my heartfelt congratulations to you, your brother, and your family. I also want to thank your brother for being willing to serve his country.
Having said all that above, his behavior towards you at home is rather self centered and thoughtless.
It may be that he's overcompensating for the discipline he was under at the Naval Academy.
Regardless, his behavior is hardly that of an officer and a gentleman, and you should tell him that, probably in those exact words.
He probably doesn't even realize that what he's doing is affecting you and the rest of your family in a negative way.
And maybe you should turn the TV off when your family's eating dinner together so you can all talk about stuff in general and about things like this in particular.
Best Wishes!

is it necessary to breast feed? like does it HAVE to be done or will the formula stuff work just as well ?
I think everyone else pretty well went into the benefits to the baby in terms of getting antibodies and the exact nourishment it needs from breast milk versus formula.
The part I like to sell to new moms, though, is that breast feeding is the best way to lose the weigh put on during pregnancy.
The body puts on extra fat to sustain the mother so that she CAN breastfeed, after all there was no such thing as formula until very recently.
If a mom doesn't breastfeed, that fat just stays around for the most part.
So, in other words, it's not just good for the baby, it's good for Mom too!

can someone give me a good workout that doesn't involve running or pushups? thanks.
No running or push-ups?
That's easy!
BICYCLING!
And if you bicycle to go places instead of getting lazy and using a car, you can not only get your exercise while accomplishing something useful, but you can also help reduce pollution and dependence on oil.

I want to move to America when i am 18, to go to university. But i'm so confused. I've heard of the green card that you have to get but how do you get it and what else do you have to do ?
Thanks
You will need to get a student visa to study in the USA.
The Department of State has a website about student visas here:
http://www.unitedstatesvisas.gov/studying.html
They also have a nice document on how to get visas at:

My dad was in a bad car accident a few days ago and he's still in the hospital. The doctors say he's stable but he's in a...coma. Which I don't even understand because how can he be stable if he's in a coma?
Well I'm supposed to be moving out in like, 10 days because I'm starting college and I'm moving 4 hours away. The thing is though, I don't want to leave my mom and my sister if my dad isn't conscious by then. I don't know what to do because I'm so scared about my dad and I don't want to leave.
Classes don't start until the 30th but move in day is in 10 days. I don't have to move in by moving day but I know I have to be there by the first day of classes. I don't even know if I'm going to be able to pay attention during class knowing that my dad is in the hospital. I just don't know what to do, I'm so confused.
I'm so very sorry for this tragic situation that has befallen your family.
The other columnists have quite clearly covered how he can be stable yet still be in a coma, I won't repeat what they've said.
You should, as another columnist also advised, call the University and explain the situation and find out what all your options are. You can't make a good decision without knowing all the options.
You're likely right that you're going to have a hard time concentrating on classes while you're worried about your Father and your family.
But the question you should perhaps be asking yourself is, what would your *father* want you to do? Would he want you to put your education on hold so you can hold his hand?
With the wonders of modern technology, you're always only a phone call or a text message away from your loved ones. If there's any change in his condition, you can find out nearly immediately.
When I was in the middle of Paramedic school, my own father was hospitalized and actually very near death after two abdominal surgeries. It was very rough, and my school made some allowances for me, but I carried on because I knew my Dad would want me to. And besides, there wasn't much for me to do sitting by his bedside anyway.
So it comes down to knowing yourself and doing what is best for you and your family.
I trust you to make the decision that is right for you.
Best wishes for you and my prayers for your father's speedy recovery.

what is the meaning of "speak softly but carry a big stick." my grandpa told me this and i dunno what it signifies
The origin of the phrase is an African proverb meaning that you should be polite and diplomatic, but that you should be ready to back yourself up with physical force if necessary.
The implication is that if others know you have the force to back yourself up, then they won't fight with you.
The phrase was used by President Theodore Roosevelt to summarize his new interventionist policy in Central and South America.
A good article on Roosevelt's policy can be found at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roosevelt_Corollary
Of course, it might be nice if next time your Grandfather references something that you don't understand, that you ask *him* what he means. He'd likely enjoy very much having the conversation with you!
Be well!
