what is the meaning of "speak softly but carry a big stick." my grandpa told me this and i dunno what it signifies

The origin of the phrase is an African proverb meaning that you should be polite and diplomatic, but that you should be ready to back yourself up with physical force if necessary.

The implication is that if others know you have the force to back yourself up, then they won't fight with you.

The phrase was used by President Theodore Roosevelt to summarize his new interventionist policy in Central and South America.

Of course, it might be nice if next time your Grandfather references something that you don't understand, that you ask *him* what he means. He'd likely enjoy very much having the conversation with you!

That's a quote by Theodore Roosevelt. It means that you should be restrained and use what power you have quietly. You'll make more friends and seem less hot-headed and arrogant.
