Smokers of the world

Question Posted Monday October 30 2006, 6:53 pm

Do you think the pack of cigarettes should be minimized to only 6? If you want to help people, I think they should put more in a pack then they do today. Do you agree or do you disagree? I'm all ears.

I dont think that reducing the number of cigarettes in a package would help at all; smokers would simply by more packages at a time. As Denis Leary said long ago:

It doesn't matter how big the warnings on the cigarettes are; you could have a black pack, with a skull and crossbones on the front, called TUMORS, and smokers would be around the block going, "I can't wait to get my hands on these fucking things! I bet ya get a tumor as soon as you light up!"

Theres very little you could probably do to significantly affect smokers, other than banning smoking altogether (which they are starting to do now) or taxing the hell out of them (which wont stop smoking, but it might help take the edge off the burden that smoking puts on health care in America, assuming we are talking about America here).

So in the end, I would say it wouldn't matter at all...you could make cigarettes 1 per package, and people will just grap 20-30 individual cigarettes if they want to. Plus I imagine they will still make cartons, the only difference would be the way the cigarettes are packaged inside the carton.

I like our system (in Canada)... cigarettes are very expensive because of tobacco taxes (10$ a pack or so) and they have a huge warning label with a gross picture on it of lung cancer or something like it.

Well, since most of the money that is charged for a pack goes to taxes, I think that less should be put in (or same amount) and prices should be raised. If a smoker is going to continue their habit, it should be hard and if they do choose to continue it then if schools and the public benefit from tax money because of it, that's slightly better.

I'd rather have them stop selling cigarettes but I know that no matter what, we can't change that. Reducing the amout of cigarettes in a pack would make people keep buys more and more and eather way, they could still be smoking a lot.
