Question Posted Monday March 8 2010, 2:34 pm

Ok, I am a freshmen, and some of my friends have started drinking and doing just really stupid stuff in high school. how can i tell her that she is being SO dumb! we both LOVE sports, and they are like our lives, and i REALLY dont want to see something happen to her! And, if she does get caught with an underage, whats the worse that can happen? Thanks SO much!

Good for you :) well first, just going off by what happened at my school a couple years ago, is nothing honestly.. The girls that were caught had to do service. The guy was a great baseball player and had a scholarship for it, but lost it bc the college didn't want to support that kind of behavior. But with our actual high school, nothing was done. Sorry not much help!

First of all, it's really great that your looking out for your friend and are concerned with her well being, but understand that you can only influence her to a certain point. If you want her to really respect your opinion, don't make her feel like your attacking her. Just let her know that your concerned about some of the decisions she's been making lately, and let her know your only worried because you care about her.

Since underage drinking is illegal, so you can get in a lot of trouble if you get caught. It really all depends on what the laws in your state are. During my sophomore year i was caught up in a situation where the cops caught me and my friends drinking at a small party. They checked everyones blood alcohol content and then let the sober people go home. Anyone who had been drinking had to call their parents to pick them up at the house. The situation could have been a lot worse depending on what kind of mood the police officer was in. I'm pretty sure they've been cracking down on the laws lately so now it's probably more likely that people caught drinking would actually be taken to jail.

if she gets caught underage alot of things can happen. sometimes the police will just release you into a gaurdians care, sometimes you'll get a ticket for underage comsumption/posession. they can also revoke you drivers lisence/permit for anywhere from 6 months to until you turn 21. when you talk to her, dont attack her. dont call her dumb or stupid or even tell her shes being so. everyone drinks in highschool, its just at what degree do you do it. make sure shes not driving, getting in the car with someone whos been drinking, make sure shes in a safe place and most importantly that she knows her limits. make her aware of effects of long term drinking -- liver failure, kidney failure, alcohol poisening, just have a girls night one night and talk about it all.
