im 13 i just got a reptile in my cousins back yard, we live in massachusetts -- it is prob about a little bigger then my pointer finger, its really really thin and has a long tail it is black with one reddish - brownish colored stripe from his head to his tail , he has four legs, his tail is a little a little smaller then my pinky finger any idea of what it is .. i dont know if it is a newt or a salamander.. any advice on how to tell the two apart would be helpful
Wheeler answered Saturday September 30 2006, 10:08 pm: Technically there is no difference between a newt and a salamander, salamanders can also be known as newts. Newts are usually on land, and salamanders prefer the water. A
n animal with ridges or grooves along its sides (between the front and back legs; these are called costal grooves) is a salamander, and that one with rough or granular skin is a newt. [ Wheeler's advice column | Ask Wheeler A Question ]
