Senior Project

Question Posted Thursday September 28 2006, 3:49 pm

I don't know if this is like a MO thing or what. But my teachers tell me that if I don't do well on my senior project I won't graduate high school. This being because I will fail Government without the project and Government is a requried class. I was just wondering if this is true and they won't let me graduate on time if I happen to not do so well on the project...

it's highly likely. I know kids who have graduated late (and NOT walked with the class) because of big projects in required classes. about 7% of my class has to repeat junior english before graduating this year because they failed the big paper we have. sure, it could be just a motivator, but it depends on the school.

AND. only about 70% of the class graduates at my school. we're public as well.

They're trying to scare you. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that every senior at your school last year graduated, except maybe the occassional person who skipped class every day.

Do you think every single senior did the project perfectly? Probably not, and I'm pretty sure some of them didn't do very well on it either. But they still graduated.

You will graduate if you do the project with some effort. Your school wouldn't deny you the right to graduate because your project isn't good. Unless you go to a fancy private school, you will graduate on time and everything will turn out fine.

There is another option, though. If you do the project and your school decides that you didn't do very well and worse comes to worse, you can still get a GED, which is equivalent to a high school diploma. 95% of colleges accept GED graduates, by the way.

Typically in high school, especially senior year, they dont want to actually make you not graduate. They throw that out there to motivate you. Especially in a class like government, they usually wont just fail you because you didnt do great on the project.

Now, this varies if you are in public or private school a bit, public school is more likely to just say fuck it and let you walk at graduation. Private... well they can be a bit more stubborn about it.

Worst case, they might make you take government in summer school if you actually did fail it, and still let you walk at graduation.

Dont worry about it too much. Talk to your parents about it (they should definately take your side if you have to talk to the principal) and you can probably get it worked out.
