Soda Addict.

Question Posted Thursday September 21 2006, 8:41 pm

I'm addicted to soda.
I drink up to three a day and I always have one before I go to school to wake me up. When I don't have one, I get big headaches. I really need to stop drinking them, but I've tried so many different methods and none of them worked.

Does anyone know any tips to quitting?

Well, your problem is probably caffeine-related. I know a lot of people who have developed caffeine addictions, and it's really rough to get out of.

Here's what's worked before... if you're drinking a caffeinated pop, cut down your number over the course of a week or so. Replace it with decaffeinated pop (I know that there's Caffeine-Free Coke and Pepsi) so you won't be missing out on pop, but you won't be pumping yourself full of caffeine.

First, you are going to get headaches when you don't drink caffeine because your body goes through withdrawal. So to minimize this, start cutting your intake by 1/4 or so every few days. You will really have to stick with it and there is still a possibility of getting headaches so you may want to keep some Tylenol on you until you've gotten yourself down to a reasonable limit. Also, you will still need fluid intake, so I suggest water...juice is okay but a lot of empty calories and sugar.

Try to replace the soda with another drink (such as juice etc.). If you have to drink soda, drink diet (it tastes bad, so maybe the taste will make you want something else). I used to drink sodas a lot and I switched to water. Now I hardly ever drink soda and I don't miss it. Soda is really bad for you, so it's a good thing that you're trying to quit. As for the headaches, you're getting them because you're addicted to the caffeine. If you need to get rid of the headaches, you can take Excedrin (it has 65 mg of caffeine) and it should help for a while. Try to stop drinking them slowly instead of quitting all together to make the headaches less intense. If you have money for soda durring school, then just bring enough for lunch or carry your lunch (with a drink other than soda) and leave your money at home so you won't be tempted to buy soda. I hope this helped and good luck! <3 Dana

when you wake up drink milk.
when you crave soda, drink lemonade or gatorade, or anything else besides it.
