what does opiate of the masses mean?

That probably comes from the quote "Religion is the opiate of the masses."

It means that religion sedates, or zombifies, the common people.

An opiate is a sedative, like opium for instance. therefore an opiate of the masses is something that sedates the masses...did you hear that out of a song or something?
