Idle is when you don't do anything in aim for a period of about 10 minutes. You can appear away by changing your status (there should be a thing that says online and you can change it). So to appear idle just go away for a while.

i don't know if this would work for your macintosh computer, but its worth a try. on your buddylist where the notebook for the away messages is, press Setup then Preferences. then click the second little box that says 'dim buddies after they have been idle for 20 minutes' and where the 20 is, change that to a ten. and whenever you're away from your computer for 10 minutes, then you will be idle!

good luck and i hope i helped!

You automatically appear as idle when you stop using the computer for about 30 minutes. You can probably change this under "Options", which is either under "Tools" or AIM (click the name of the program on the bar at the top of your screen).
