Garage Band, Acid? Music and songwriting programs?

Can some people tell me about garage band and acid and any other songwirting programs youc an use on the comp? Which ones good, how to use it, etc. Because I'm thinking of buying one. Please don't copy n paste something from a webstie about it, I want your own opinions and your information from your experience. Thanks.

go to download.com and click audio/video on the left. then click audio production. You can then search or filter 400 or so programs they have. Most the the programs have reviews on the site from users.
