If you see somebody that looks like a good friend, go up to them and say Hi. Compliment them on something and just start off on an easy conversation about something simple. For gym, you can do the same thing, find somebody that's in your gym class and make friends with them. Then if you dont understand, you can ask that friend. If you can't make friends in gym, talk to the gym teacher about what you have to do.

Meeting new people should come naturally. If you see someone sitting alone looking bored, just come up to them, introduce yourself and start off a conversation. You'd be surprised how well that actually works out.
As for gym, don't worry. I'm sure the teacher will explain everything you have to do.
