sizzlinmandolin answered Monday August 28 2006, 4:20 pm: It's against the law to rip it off unless you are the one that bought it. Sometimes the tags will say it's unlawful to remove the tag unless you are the "consumer" or "customer". Both of those are words meaning "the person that bought it" or got it as a gift from the person that bought it etc. I'm not sure why it's there, but my guess is that there have been problems in the past where wholesalers, retailers, and such have ripped off off the tags.
