i know this is probably a dumb question, but I always wanted to know:: why is it against the law to rip the tags off of your mattresses?

you cant rip them off if you dont buy them, only if you owe them

basically, its like that with everthing, like when your buy jeans oyou cant take off the tags until you buy them

It's against the law to rip it off unless you are the one that bought it. Sometimes the tags will say it's unlawful to remove the tag unless you are the "consumer" or "customer". Both of those are words meaning "the person that bought it" or got it as a gift from the person that bought it etc. I'm not sure why it's there, but my guess is that there have been problems in the past where wholesalers, retailers, and such have ripped off off the tags. I hope my answer wasn't too confusing and feel free to rip your tags off if you haven't already. :)
