virus??

Question Posted Tuesday August 15 2006, 9:16 pm

ok im really annyoyed right now.. i think i have a virus on my computer.

heres how it started:

i went to myspace layouts site and like a popup came up and i exed it out then my computer started freezing so i restarted it and then i saw an icon on my desktop it was like play poker for $10K and i deleted it then there was another one like FREE GAS (it came up right after i delted the poker one)and then internet explorer looks weird now. it says like mirar and there are tabs that say "dunham. baseball. job seekers. investing." but they change every time and now all i get are pop ups when im on AIM and they never came before.

so i was wondering do i have a virus? and if i do, how do i get rid of it?

thankss

It's indeed spyware. Here are some simple ways to get if off:

First way is to find the word "mirar" (it's a name of a Trojan). Go to CTRL ALT DELETE, click on PROCESSES and find mirar, or any unfamiliar programs especially ones that end with .EXE (extension name that stands for executable program.) Restart your computer. Then, go to START --> SEARCH (on the right), and search for mirar. Delete any files seen. But be careful.

Second way is to use an antivirus program or antisyware program. Nortan is pretty good at it. They offer free scanning and deleting viruses, trojans, or spyware. Sometimes this is ineffective, so try first tip.

Hope that helped =)

Another good program is SpywareBlaster
([Link](Mouse over link to see full location))

But it's usage is more about prevention than fixing.

I think Krupple pretty much covered anything else I could think of. What I can add on though, is like Krupple said, switching to using Mozilla's Firefox browsers is a big help and so are some of the freeware extensions that you can download for it.

Examples:

NoScript

Adblock Plus
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Adblock Filterset.G Updater
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

(Note: These Firefox extensions are great for preventing adware and spyware from getting on your computer. As far as getting rid of it (once you have some) goes, try using some, (if not all) of the programs that Krupple suggested (especially Spybot Search & Destroy).

I hope I was helpful as well.

Krupple answered Wednesday August 16 2006, 1:34 am:
First I'd download and use Firefox rather than Internet Explorer.
www.firefox.org

Here is AdAware. Sometimes programs cannot be found in Add/Remove program list, but this will help you find programs hidden on your computer, so you can get rid of the poppup generators at the source.

Here's another that protects and cleans spyware out of your computer.

Those are two of the safest, most popular on the net.

my computer use to do that.. and it still kinda is. its spyware and what i do is go to control panel then add/remove programs and then delete the programs that were downloaded into your computer without you knowing, because mine did that. and then after your done with that, scan your computer for adware and spyware.. i use ad-aware personal and it works pretty good.. but theyre may be other good programs to get rid of spyware so you can try those too
