Theater Chest Voice

Question Posted Saturday August 12 2006, 9:19 pm

F/13
Sorry for the length and for it not being very well written...
I've been doing theater since 1st grade at school (and have gotten 8/10 leads). I'm changing to a different school where I hear the theater program is really serious and intense. The only problem is that my chest voice isn't too good.
My friends say that I am AMAZING at singing. That's with my "throat" voice. With my chest voice I have to sing really low, and I barely have any range at all. I want to get a good part, but how can I develop my chest voice to perform theater songs in a more intense and serious environment? Can I use my "throat" voice because it's much better and loud, but I'm not sure if it's loud enough.
PLEASE help!!

alrite im in choir so first off theres your chest voice your mid voice(throat) and your head voice. if you cant sing low its not a biggie it just means your not an alto and chances are if the theatre program is that serious theyll have openings for alto and soprano leads. if you can sing in your throat and head voice it means your a soprano. but since your 13 your voice hasnt stopped developing yet and its still changing even if you are a girl, ours just change slower and over time. try doing warm up excersizes to get used to all ranges, if you need to sing in your chest voice make sure you take deep breaths, not quick whispy breaths. if you are working with your high range, you need to lift your soft pallet, its in the back of your mouth, the best way to do that is to raise your eyebrows and feel your mouth open wide even in the back which sounds weird but it makes sense. id advise getting a voice teacher, b/c they can work w/ you one on one w/ your specific voice type. good luck!

I have the same problem where I can't sing to low. SO I suggest maybe going for singing lessons. Or ask a music or choir teacher to help you practice after school. You'll be sure to get a part.

i think that to really develop your chest voice, you need to take voice lessons. voice teachers know all about that kind of stuff and can probably help you more than a group of random advice columnists :) haha. i'm not actually in theater, but i am in a military marching band. we always have to yell and use chest voices. i'm a 120 pound girl and i have to yell like a 200 pound man. basically what we do is "bark", and our drum majors taught us to take the sound from our chest and just let it rip. when they yell commands and stuff, they sometimes even have to lean backward and dip down to get the sound out. they're both girls and not only do they have to have big voices, but they also have to project the sound over a 200 person band. so i think you should practice using a huge voice... even if it's just like standing outside and screaming to get your voice warmed up. i don't know how helpful this really is, but i hope you get leads at your new school. :)
