Question Posted Friday August 11 2006, 8:58 pm

I just started playing tennis about 2 months ago and i decided to try out for my high school team. But now im not so sure if i should try out or not because all the other girls have been playing there whole lives. Also does anyone play tennis and have any tips for serving?

Give it a shot. We only have a varsity team at my school, so our coach usually keeps everyone. I'm not on varsity but the other girls and I go to all the matches and practices and get to play matches against the other girls on the other teams. The games don't count for the school team score, but it is a lot of fun. You could really learn alot from the other girls on the team, and then have a good chance of making the team next year. As for serving my best advice would be to take your time. Also practice throwing the ball Straight up and high, that way you have enough time to hit it on the way down. Don't worry about serving at 78 MPH just worry about getting it in the service box.

I agree with the previous answer. Definately try out, you have nothing to lose really and everything to gain (just think if you actually beat out one of these girls who has played all her life...).

As for serving tips, its kind of hard over the internet, but heres what comes to mind off the top of my head:
- How you toss the ball in the air is extremely important. It has to be done just right, i.e. a little in front of you, but not too much, a bit higher than your reach but not by much etc. If you toss the ball wrong, let it drop without swinging and start over.
- Keep your eyes on the ball. Sounds obvious but people do forget
- Everyone has their own styles of course, but learn to get your whole body into the serve. Some players hit mainly using their arms and their serves will always be rather weak.

Well thats all I can think of without actually being able to see you serve. Good luck with your tryouts.

I cannot help you with any serving tips since I know almost nothing about tennis.

BUT I will tell you that you should defiantly try out. Even if you don't think you are as good as the other girls. If you don't, there will always be that question in the back of your mind on whether you would have made it or not. And believe me, it doesn't go away and it sucks.

And who knows you might be just as good as those girls and make the team. Or, the coach could put you on as an alternate (if your school has those that is). If that happens, then you'll be able to work with the team and better your game so you can play next year or even later on this year.

If you don't make it though, don't worry about it and don't give up on the sport. You've only been playing for a short amount of time so practice for try outs next year.

Go to tryouts confidante, do your best, and don't worry about the others.
