Laws

Question Posted Friday August 4 2006, 12:02 pm

Ok I always wondered if store clerks we allowed to go through costomers' purses & bags.I live in Missouri & I wonder if that`s the law or something. I heard that if the clerks do go through someones bag & they find nothing that was stolen they/the store can be sued.

It's illegal without the customer's permission.

well in Ohio, they can take your bags/purses from you. (i got this from some girls that shoplift...) so they hide things they steal in their pants/sleeves. I'm not really sure what they can do. <3

I don't know for sure. I would think though if police have to have a warrant to look through your things then a store clerk would have no right to look either.

I was a convenience store clerk at one time and we weren't allowed to do that. If we saw someone take something we were to call the police. You are right, doing so would be setting yourself up for all kinds of lawsuits.
