If there are no outlets in the upper part of your home (often the case) then it's better to be upstairs. Although smoke does rise, if it is trapped in the venting system, you won't be breathing it in. However, if you are concerned, the best thing to do would be to open a window and stay by it for a while.

and if it's you doing the smoking, go outside.
sassysara answered Monday July 31 2006, 8:24 pm: Actually smoke rises so it will get into the vents and affect you more if you are upstairs.
It is a fan above the stove, the best thing a person can do to get rid of smoke from a cigarette is to light a candle or two, it actually absorbs the smoke. So if whoever is smoking your best bet is to ask them to light a candle and stay downstairs. [ sassysara's advice column | Ask sassysara A Question ]
